On July 30, 2024, a significant operation, dubbed Operation Andover, was launched in Mpumalanga Province, South Africa, following critical intelligence provided by the South African Investigative Liaison with Focused Conservation. The intelligence was shared with the South African Police Service (SAPS) Intervention Unit and the HAWKS, targeting a suspect involved in illegal hunting activities.
Armed with this intelligence, a search warrant was obtained for the suspect’s residence. However, upon the officers’ approach, the suspect fled the scene, successfully evading apprehension. Despite the suspect’s escape and some missing items from the residence, the search resulted in the seizure of a hunting rifle, ammunition, and hunting knives—key tools likely used in the illegal activities.
A warrant has been issued for the arrest of the suspect, and efforts are ongoing to bring the individual to justice.
This operation underscores the vital role that intelligence plays in combating illegal hunting and wildlife crimes. Focused Conservation continues to support law enforcement agencies like SAPS and the HAWKS in their efforts to protect South Africa’s wildlife and hold those who threaten it accountable.
