High Court of Kenya Orders Forfeiture in Major Sandalwood Investigation

In a landmark ruling, the High Court of Kenya Nairobi Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Division executed a forfeiture judgment order, seizing two vehicles and seven bank accounts connected to the extensive sandalwood investigation known as Operation Tortoise. This investigation, spearheaded by the Kenya Wildlife Task Force (KWTF), marks a significant victory in the ongoing battle to protect Kenya’s endangered sandalwood tree.

The operation was executed on February 3, 2023, when a multi-agency team led by the KWTF responded to intelligence reports indicating the illegal transportation of sandalwood in Samburu County. The team, operating in a notoriously hostile environment with frequent attacks on police convoys, embarked on a perilous mission to locate and intercept the illicit cargo.

After several days of searching, KWTF intelligence pinpointed the approximate location of the bogged-down Isuzu lorry in the sandy terrain. Under the cover of night and facing challenging conditions, the team approached the area, causing the suspects to flee. By daylight, the team discovered the Isuzu lorry, partially unloaded, and stuck in the sand. Nearby, they found a Land Rover, believed to be used for transporting sandalwood from forest areas inaccessible to the larger lorry.

The investigation revealed that the vehicles were used to transport a staggering 14,330 kilos of sandalwood. Subsequent efforts by the task force led to the identification and arrest of the suspects involved in the illegal trade.

The forfeiture of the vehicles and bank accounts represents a critical step in curbing the illegal sandalwood trade and protecting Kenya’s natural heritage. The KWTF’s success in this operation underscores the importance of continued vigilance and cooperation among various agencies in the fight against wildlife crime.

Operation Tortoise serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by those on the frontlines of conservation and the ongoing need for robust enforcement and judicial support to safeguard endangered species.
