Operation Holy Night: Rescuing Pangolins and Disrupting Trafficking Networks in Nigeria

Wildlife traffickers will exploit anything—even myths. A recent trend in West Africa has seen pangolins marketed as “electric pangolins,” allegedly inspired by claims of pangolins in the Mojave Desert emitting electrical currents from their scaled bodies. While the scientific community remains skeptical, traffickers have sought to capitalize on the phenomenon for profit, putting more pressure on already endangered species.

On December 9, 2025, Focused Conservation, working in partnership with the Nigeria Customs Service Special Wildlife Office (NSWO), acted on intelligence regarding prominent traffickers in the Iyana Ipaja area of Lagos who were involved in the illegal trade of white-bellied pangolins. A carefully coordinated operation led to a direct meeting with the traffickers, where the sale of pangolins was confirmed.

During this high-risk operation, now dubbed Operation Holy Night, officers arrested three traffickers and rescued three live pangolins. Tragically, one of the rescued pangolins later died due to injuries sustained from a hunter’s trap. The remaining two are now receiving expert care from GreenFingers Wildlife Conservation Initiative, ensuring their recovery and long-term safety.

The traffickers remain in custody and are being charged with wildlife trafficking offenses.

Operation Holy Night highlights the importance of strong partnerships between enforcement agencies and conservation organizations. By combining intelligence, operational expertise, and wildlife care, Focused Conservation and its partners are making tangible impacts in the fight against illegal wildlife trade.

Every rescue underscores the ongoing need to disrupt trafficking networks, protect vulnerable species, and support frontline teams who risk their safety daily to safeguard wildlife.

Special thanks to the Nigeria Customs Service and GreenFingers Wildlife Conservation Initiative for their collaboration and unwavering commitment to wildlife protection.
