Successful Conviction in Sandalwood Trafficking Case in Kenya

On February 3, 2023, the Kenya Wildlife Task Force (KWTF) achieved a significant success with Operation Impala. Officers intercepted a Land Rover carrying 300 kilos of sandalwood in Samburu East, arresting two suspects engaged in the trafficking of this endangered species. Following extensive investigations, including age verification for one of the accused, the case was brought to Kahawa Court.

On November 6, the court delivered its judgment:

  • Defendant 1: 2 years’ imprisonment or a 200,000 KES fine
  • Defendant 2: 1 year’s imprisonment or a 100,000 KES fine

Additionally, the court is reviewing a request for the forfeiture of the vehicle used in trafficking, with a decision expected at a future hearing.

Focused Conservation commends the KWTF’s unwavering commitment to combat wildlife crime and enforce critical protections for endangered species.
