On February 20, 2026, in Kano, Nigeria, a quiet piece of intelligence set in motion a high-risk operation that would once again demonstrate the growing strength of Nigeria’s fight against wildlife trafficking.
Acting on intelligence developed by Focused Conservation, the Nigeria Customs Service Special Wildlife Office (SWO) launched a covert enforcement effort known as Operation Lexus. The target: the illegal international trafficking of a young African lion cub.
Operations involving live wildlife are unpredictable. Traffickers often move quickly, and the risk to officers and the animals themselves is significant. But this time, something remarkable happened. A newly deployed SWO officer, on his very first field operation, stepped forward to lead the team. Drawing directly from the training, mentoring, and operational guidance provided through the Focused Conservation partnership, he coordinated the approach, managed the scene, and helped ensure the operation was executed safely and effectively.
The result: two traffickers were arrested, and a young male lion cub, trafficked across international borders was rescued before disappearing deeper into the black market trade.
The arrests are only the beginning. With additional intelligence and evidence now in hand, investigators will continue building the case against those involved in the trafficking network.
Immediately following the seizure, Focused Conservation coordinated with the Greenfingers Wildlife Conservation Initiative and Pandrillus to ensure the cub’s safe transfer and proper care. The following day, the lion was transported by air to Lagos, where it will join another lion recently rescued during a separate SWO operation supported by Focused Conservation. Together, they now have a second chance, far removed from the traffickers who sought to profit from their lives.
Operation Lexus underscores what makes the Focused Conservation model different. This was not simply a rescue; it was a demonstration of capacity built from within. A newly trained officer led a complex, high-risk operation and delivered results. That leadership did not happen by accident—it was the direct outcome of sustained mentorship, embedded expertise, and a commitment to strengthening specialized wildlife crime units on the ground.
Every successful interception sends a message to traffickers: Nigeria is no longer easy territory. And every rescued animal is proof that targeted training, intelligence-led enforcement, and strong partnerships are changing the landscape of wildlife crime—one operation at a time.
