Focused Conservation’s role in helping initiate, mentor, and fund specialized wildlife crime units across Africa has been well documented and the results continue to speak for themselves. These units are not only disrupting criminal networks and reducing the trafficking of protected wildlife, they are also elevating public awareness and strengthening inter-agency cooperation in ways that were once thought impossible.
A recent success in Nigeria underscores just how effective this approach has become. The Nigeria Customs Service Special Wildlife Office (NSWO) established, trained, and supported by Focused Conservation has been conducting an aggressive nationwide awareness initiative at security checkpoints. These efforts are designed to help officers identify and stop the movement of live wildlife and contraband, while educating the public about the importance of wildlife protection.
On November 16, 2025 at the Gbajo checkpoint, this training paid off. During a routine vehicle inspection, Customs officers intercepted a trafficker transporting two Tantalus monkeys and a lion cub. The live animals were immediately seized, and Focused Conservation coordinated their rapid recovery from the checkpoint. Working alongside Greenfingers Wildlife Initiative, the team ensured the animals received proper care and veterinary support.
This operation now referred to as Operation Rose is a clear example of how strategic support, targeted training, and hands-on mentorship can dramatically enhance a country’s ability to combat wildlife crime. The results demonstrate not only the impact of these specialized units, but also the growing commitment within Nigeria to protect its native species.
Focused Conservation remains proud to stand with its partners in Nigeria as they continue building a stronger, more effective national response to wildlife trafficking one successful operation at a time.
