October 16, 2025 – Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria
With support from Focused Conservation, officers from the Nigeria Customs Service Special Wildlife Office (NSWO) successfully executed a targeted enforcement action known as Operation Pink in Maiduguri, Borno State. The operation targeted an individual suspected of illegally selling two spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta), a species protected under Schedule 1 of the Endangered Species Act of Nigeria. This legislation strictly prohibits the hunting, capture, or trade of listed wildlife species, including the spotted hyena.
Borno State remains one of the most volatile regions in Nigeria, often associated with terror-related activity and the presence of the extremist group Boko Haram. In recognition of the elevated threat level, a comprehensive risk assessment was carried out prior to deployment, involving the field officers, the Deputy Head of Unit, and a Focused Conservation Technical Advisor.
Following a period of intelligence development, two NSWO officers traveled to Maiduguri on October 16, 2025, to initiate contact with the suspect. After initial communications, the suspect directed the team to a meeting location in Layin Hadlza, where, following a period of negotiation, the operatives were escorted to a secondary site where the hyenas were being held.
Upon arrival, officers discovered evidence suggesting the location had been used previously to house multiple animals, including numerous heavy metal cages. The two spotted hyenas were confined together in a single metal cage, chained, and visibly distressed. After confirming the illegal offer for sale, the Nigeria Customs Service support team entered the premises and arrested two suspects. Both hyenas were safely seized.
With assistance from Greenfingers Wildlife Initiative, the rescued animals are now under care and observation in Nigeria.
This operation highlights the dedication, adaptability, and courage of the officers of the Nigeria Special Wildlife Office. Despite operating in one of the most dangerous parts of the country, the team was able to conduct covert operations, ensure the welfare of the animals, and achieve a significant enforcement outcome.
Focused Conservation commends the Nigeria Customs Service Special Wildlife Office for their professionalism and commitment to protecting Nigeria’s endangered species, even under the most difficult and high-risk conditions.
