March 26, 2025 – In a major victory against wildlife trafficking, the Uganda Wildlife Crime Unit (UWCU) successfully intercepted and seized 41.7 kilograms of elephant ivory during a covert operation on March 26, 2025. Dubbed Operation Coach, the intelligence-led operation resulted in the arrest of four suspected traffickers and the recovery of two full tusks, each measuring 112 cm and 140 cm, along with additional ivory pieces.
The multi-agency team, spearheaded by UWCU, acted on intelligence indicating that the traffickers were in possession of approximately 50 kilograms of ivory and were actively seeking buyers. The investigation led the team to the Kawanda Research Station, a facility owned by the Ministry of Agriculture, Industry, and Fisheries, where the traffickers had concealed the contraband.
A search of the site revealed that the ivory had been buried within the plantation area. Preliminary assessments suggest the ivory originated from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), highlighting the persistent transnational nature of the illegal wildlife trade.
The successful seizure underscores the UWCU’s commitment to disrupting wildlife crime networks and bringing offenders to justice. Authorities continue to investigate the case to determine the full extent of the trafficking operation and any additional suspects involved.
