Wildlife Trafficker Arrested in Nigeria During Operation Sycamore

Mfum, Nigeria – March 12, 2025 – Authorities in Nigeria have made a significant breakthrough in the fight against illegal wildlife trafficking with the arrest of a suspect near the Nigeria-Cameroon border. The operation, dubbed Operation Sycamore, was carried out by the Nigeria Special Wildlife Office (NSWO) with critical support from the Nigeria Customs Intelligence Unit and assistance from the international conservation organization Focused Conservation.

Acting on intelligence reports indicating illegal wildlife trade activity in the region, law enforcement officers stopped a suspect’s vehicle at a checkpoint near Mfum. Upon searching the vehicle, authorities discovered a disturbing haul of wildlife remains, including:

  • 2 gorilla skulls
  • 4 primate legs
  • 125 hornbill skulls
  • 211 parrot skulls
  • 29 parrot feathers
  • 5 eagle skulls

The suspect was immediately taken into custody, and an investigation is underway to determine the full extent of the trafficking network and its connections to international illegal trade.

Focused Conservation, which works with wildlife crime units worldwide, played a crucial role in supporting NSWO’s efforts in Operation Sycamore. The organization remains dedicated to identifying and dismantling trafficking networks, mentoring law enforcement agencies, and facilitating critical investigations. However, securing funding remains a challenge in the fight to protect endangered species from exploitation.

“This operation is a stark reminder of the ongoing threats facing some of the world’s most vulnerable wildlife species,” William Brown, CEO from Focused Conservation stated. “Every arrest, every seizure, and every dismantled trafficking network is a step toward safeguarding these animals from extinction.”

As the investigation into this latest case continues, conservationists and law enforcement agencies stress the need for stronger international cooperation, stricter penalties for traffickers, and increased funding for wildlife protection efforts.

Wildlife crime remains one of the most lucrative illicit trades globally, ranking alongside drug and arms trafficking. Without sustained and coordinated action, species such as gorillas, hornbills, parrots, and eagles will remain at risk of disappearing forever.

For now, Operation Sycamore stands as a critical victory in the ongoing war against wildlife trafficking—a testament to the dedication of law enforcement agencies and conservation organizations working tirelessly to protect the planet’s most endangered species.
