Kaabong, Uganda – January 24, 2025
A covert sting operation initiated by the Uganda Wildlife Crime Unit (UWCU) along with other agencies has led to the arrest of a wildlife trafficker and the rescue of a live Ground pangolin in Kaabong.
UWCU intelligence uncovered that a ground pangolin was being offered for sale in the Kotido area at a price of 100 million UGX ($26,000). Understanding the urgency, UWCU formulated a targeted operational plan to intercept the illegal sale.
On January 24, the suspect traveled to Kaabong to complete the transaction. Upon arrival at the meeting point, the trafficker was caught red-handed, carrying the pangolin hidden inside a black bag. Officers moved in swiftly, securing both the pangolin and the suspect.
The rescued pangolin was safely transported to Kidepo National Park, where conservation teams ensured its immediate release back into the wild.
Meanwhile, the suspect was taken into custody and transported to Kampala, where he will face legal action for engaging in illegal wildlife trade.
