In a decisive victory against wildlife trafficking, the Kenya Wildlife Task Force (KWTF) successfully concluded Operation Tiger, which targeted individuals involved in the illegal ivory trade. This operation, supported by Focused Conservation, led to the arrest and conviction of three traffickers near Lunga Lunga, Kenya in November 2023.
Operation Tiger focused on disrupting a network trafficking elephant ivory. Acting on intelligence, the KWTF initiated a sting operation, resulting in the arrest of three individuals found in possession of 59.2 kilograms of ivory. This critical operation highlighted the team’s commitment to protecting Kenya’s iconic elephants from poaching and illegal trade. The arrests were not without challenges. During the operation, officers faced violent resistance, with some sustaining injuries. Despite these obstacles, the KWTF’s resolve led to the successful apprehension of all three suspects. On November 12, 2023, the traffickers were charged under Kenya’s Wildlife Conservation and Management Act.
A Kenyan court found the individuals guilty of dealing in ivory, sentencing them to seven years in prison or a fine of 2 million KES (approximately $15,000 USD). This judgment sends a strong message about Kenya’s zero-tolerance policy towards wildlife crimes.
Operation Tiger underscores the dedication and effectiveness of the KWTF and their partner Focused Conservation. Through mentorship and strategic support, Focused Conservation has been instrumental in empowering wildlife crime units to bring traffickers to justice. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of collaborative efforts in combating wildlife trafficking. The successful prosecution of these traffickers is a victory not only for Kenya but for global conservation efforts. Focused Conservation congratulates the Kenya Wildlife Task Force for their unwavering dedication and stands ready to support future initiatives to protect our planet’s most threatened species.
