Successful UWCU-Led Operation in Rukungiri Leads to Seizure of 60 kg of Elephant Ivory and Arrest

On July 25, 2024, a strategic multi-agency operation called Operation Yazoo, driven by the Uganda Wildlife Crime Unit (UWCU), culminated in the arrest of a suspect found in possession of 60 kilograms of elephant ivory in Rukungiri, southwestern Uganda.

The operation began when intelligence gathered by the UWCU indicated that there was an imminent movement of ivory from one concealment location to another in Rukungiri. Given the 12+ hour drive from Kampala, it was not feasible to dispatch UWCU operatives from the capital in time. Recognizing the urgency, the UWCU quickly relayed this critical information to the Uganda Wildlife Authority’s (UWA) Head of Intelligence at Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Responding promptly, UWA personnel were mobilized and successfully intercepted the cache of ivory while it was in transit. The operation resulted in the arrest of a male suspect and the seizure of eight whole ivory tusks weighing a total of 60 kg. The suspect has been charged and will face trial at Rukungiri District Court.

This operation underscores the effectiveness of the strong working relationships that the UWCU has developed with its partners across Uganda. The ability to share vital information in real time and coordinate swift responses was key to the success of this mission.

Focused Conservation applauds the dedication and collaboration of all involved in this operation. Their efforts not only disrupted an illegal ivory trade route but also reinforced Uganda’s commitment to protecting its endangered wildlife.
