The South Africa Police Service (SAPS) – HAWKS unit successfully executed Operation Alpha in Nelspruit, following critical intelligence provided by the South Africa Investigative Liaison from Focused Conservation. The intelligence indicated that a suspect was illegally in possession of firearms and ammunition.
Acting on this information, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) led a targeted search of the suspect’s premises. The operation resulted in the seizure of a .458 hunting rifle, a shotgun, a 9mm handgun, and illegal ammunition. The suspect was promptly arrested and has since appeared in Calcutta Court.
Forensic analysis will be conducted on all seized weapons to determine if they have been used in rhino poaching activities in Kruger National Park, a region notorious for such illegal activities.
This successful operation highlights the critical role that intelligence and collaboration play in combating wildlife crime. Focused Conservation remains committed to supporting SAPS-HAWKS and other law enforcement agencies in their mission to protect South Africa’s endangered wildlife.
